Should Editors Tell Authors to Do Things They Wouldn't or Don't Do Themselves?


When I launched out into the social media scene, my main purpose was to see what it really takes to build some sort of digital presence, so that I could say to my authors, "You really should have an online and social media presence," without feeling like hypocrite. I realize not many editors blog on a regular basis--or at all--and some do not have any presence on any social media sites. Yet, the common response to aspiring authors wanting to know what it would take to begin building a platform is start blogging and join Twitter and Facebook.

Central Florida May Be No New York, but the Literary Scene Here Is Alive and Well


New York City is known for being the epicenter of book publishing, and in times past I have often wished I lived in New York--if it had Florida-like weather. But I have decidedly stepped out of my wishing to be there to enjoying being here, and what I've discovered is a flourishing love of the literary arts in my local area. I really didn't need to look too hard. If you are ever in the Central Florida area or if you are a resident, be sure to check out these wonderful literary events and publishing organizations.

5 Reasons I Love Working with Agents



The word on the street about editor-agent relationships is muddled at best and negative at worst. But I don’t give that much thought when I am in the trenches with an agent reviewing a proposal and negotiating an author’s contract. I decide how my relationships with agents are going to be—and I like working with agents. Why make a relationship that can be mutually beneficial unnecessarily competitive or difficult?

Editors Are Fans Too: Recap of the 2012 @UCFBookFestival


One word could describe how this year’s festival was for me: EXHILERATING. The long, one-on-one conversations with some of my favorite authors alone were something money couldn’t buy. Then add to that the panels? Wow.

I am an information hound, and I love to learn what makes people great at what they do. The atmosphere for the whole book festival weekend was set up perfectly for that.
